DEPARTMENT GENERAL PROFILE:-
Sericulture is one of the important agro-based rural Industry playing a vital role in rural
Economy social and cultural life of Assamese society. Presently three varieties of silkworm
Viz. Eri,Muga and Mulberry are in practice.
The Sericulture industry is broadly devided into three parts. First is plantation of all
three varieties of silkworm foodplants, second is the silkworm rearing and seed technology of silkworm –Eri,Muga and Mulberry and third is the proper industry i.e.Reeling and spinning of Raw silk and weaving of silk febric.
Sonitpur district enjoy a suitable climate for production of both mulberry and non-
Mulberry silk. Out of three variety of non-mulberry silkworm,Eri culture predominated and has been in practice by all sectors of people farmers under the District.From the District seasonally
for conducting rearing disease free Eri and mulberry seeds are supplied to the farmers of the District.The existing Village grazing Reserve of District provides facility to the Muga rearers for
Muga rearing in govt.plantation. Similarly the collective Mulberry garden and Eri concentration centre of this district help the mulberry and Eri rearers by providing leaves for silkworm rearing.
Moreover training programmes are also organized by the District authority of Sericulture deptt.
