ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES OF SONITPUR DISTRICT
From Singri to Hawajan
Sonitpur district has a large expanse of land where lie scattered hundreds of
archaeological remains telling stories of a glorious civilisation in this region as old as seventh century A.D.
Some of the archaeological sites are centrally protected whereas some are state
protected. The following are the major sites to name.

TEZPUR
| Temple Ruins of Bamuni Hill : To the east of present Tezpur town lie the ruins of Bamuni Hill. These belong to a group of seven shrines and like the remains of Da- Parbatia are dedicated to different Gods like Shiva, Bishnu etc. They are not of a later period than the 8th – 9th century A.D. | ![]() |

Da-Parbatia :The temple ruins of Da-Parbatia are dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu and are one of the earliest specimens of architecture and stone carving in Assam. Its door - frame is the finest and oldest specimen of sculptural or iconoclastic art in Assam. It has the characteristic style of the early Gupta period. |
| Ruins of Singri Hill:- Extensive Ruins temples at Singri Hill belong to Budhist, Siva and Durga Shrines of about 9th century A.D. and some of the specimens bear close resemblance to those at Deopani and Numaligarh . |
BISWANATH

Biswanath Siva Linga : Belongs to 9th century and has resemblance to the temple Ruins of Singri Hills.

known as " Sakraswari on the island Umatumuni
:
Established by Swargadew Siva Singha in 1741. Situated in the south west of Umatumuni hillock at Biswanath Chariali the devalaya is famous as a religious site.

GOHPUR
| Bordol Temple: Believed to be established during the time of Swargadewa Udayaditya Singha (1658-73) by Banamali Dev.It has a big tank and a dol known as Bordol . |

Note : The aforesaid protected monuments are under the Directorate of Archaeology, Govt. of Assam, Ambari,Guwahati-1.

Additional Information.
The rock inscription lying
on the Bhomoraguri hill near the Kolia Bhomora Bridge has not been recorded in
the list of the protected monuments of Sonitpur district. The inscription states
the construction of a rampart by Ahom King Pratap Sinha (1603-41 A.D.) after
defeating the Mughals in the Saka year 1538. This is the first Assamese
inscription (i.e. the language of the inscription is Assamese). So far
discovered in Assam till now.
